Wildcard Wednesday The Martian

When I saw a trailer for  this film, I was intrigued as to how a human could survive being left/abandoned on Mars, so when I had the opportunity to purchase and see it, my curiosity got the better of me. All I can say is ‘needs must’ but I had to close my eyes against the blood. This is so well done and realistic. This is edge of your seat stuff that so much can/could go wrong. Talk about being dropped in at the deep end. They have wanted to see if humans can/could survive on Mars, and be self-sufficient, grow food and the rest. I love it. Although it seems that yes, you have to be a certain type or have the right knowledge. All this would make sense as they would only send the correctly qualified people on a Mars mission. I love seeing how his mind works and him using it. He is so far from ‘Stupid’, being completely not stupid. We all know ‘Mission six’ is going to happen. Ok, then…..if ever there was something that shows us why ‘Science’ is important this is the film. It m...

Mum's Monday Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable

I watch this show because I am personally nosey and intrigued to see what the celebrities who appear on the show got/get up to. However, I 1. Don’t know how any of them got away with things and more of them haven’t been arrested 2. If these celebs are rich and famous and influential, should they be divulging the terrible antics they got up to and 3. I don’t like how Lou Sanders comes across on the show sometimes. I do, however, like some of her ‘Play on words’ but they are too few and far between to have any real relevance to the show. There is a ‘Wrong gong’  which means more negative points and a bigger chance of being ‘Crowned Unforgivable’ for the really terrible stories, but they are all bad for the people involved. Also ‘Nuts the squirrel’ is just irritating. Also, do the people who have been wronged by the celebs that appear on the show, do they really feel ok about the apology? And do they forgive them? I do watch and can/willing to see passed all the negative parts ...

Fun Friday Ratatouille

The way to turn a ‘Gift’ into a ‘Curse’. Now who’d have thought a ‘Rat’ that can cook. Oh, so sad and now that is what I call a ‘Rat infestation’. This film teaches us a lot about how a restaurant kitchen works, I want to say, in an entertaining unusual way in that an unlikely ‘Rat’ is the one teaching us. That is normally a health hazard really. It is ‘Weird’ . I agree on so many levels. Yes, again I agree ‘Insane’.this film is a strange yet amusing one to watch.  I like that the lessons for working in a restaurant kitchen keep coming. This film is certainly an education. I have mixed feelings about seeing a person that is drunk in a children’s friendly film. I see the shocking dose of reality, I am glad that the script explains a bit more than what we see. This is done cleverly and naturally within the script. I am glad the revenge didn’t last long, be careful who you upset. Yes, the truth can sound insane. They say that ‘Real life can be stranger than fiction’. Yes, of co...

Wildcard Wednesday Dirty Dancing 2 Havana Nights

The sequel to Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze. It is nice to see father and daughter dance together unlike the first one. I don’t want to compare films but in this case it was nice to see. The music and setting is fantastic and lovely, sadly, this, I see, also had to show the other side of Cuba. This film really works as a sequel to the first one, I love it. Although I do feel sorry for the ‘Boyfriend’ unlike in the first with the ‘Manager’ Neil (Lonny Price). Well I did feel sorry for him. Of course he does, it would be a very short film and a film with no point to it if he didn’t. I love the unique approach. I like how this film shows that it is not enough just to dance or know how to dance. They have talent, it just has to be focused in the right way. Love it. Sadly, a price to pay.  So thoughtful. No, no no. Now what? Now what?  I would have liked this film to have had a more exacting ending but a film that leaves you wanting more is a good film. Thank you for rea...

Mum's Monday Question Team

This is a very clever idea for a, I want to say, ‘Quiz’ show but yes, it is more of a Gameshow. This show is where the contestants themselves plus the host Richard Ayoade come up with categories to which the others answer questions on.  Each category has to have in some way 5 questions with 5 right answers to which the contestants can potentially win up to  5 points each, each round. Some of the categories are really good and well thought out, some just take advantage of the budget they have been given to have a great day out and some seem like they have just panicked and come up with something on the spur of the moment that they haven’t put much thought into. The host each week chooses a third party to deliver his category. I do have mixed feelings about this 1. He could have come up with enough himself or 2. in this case have a different  guest host every week that takes on the extra duty of overseeing the show.  I do however, like the idea that the host can...

Fun Friday Michael Mcintyre Big Show

I love this show, I love the fact that they surprise audience members by recording them whilst they are on a Karaoke night out. I love that he has the act/person/band on stage to help with the ‘Singalog’ with hilarious results. I love that this programme gives opportunities for ‘Dreams’ to come true with the ‘Unexpected stars of the show’ where a person nominates a friend/relative to sing at the end of the show. It would, however, be nice to see what happens to them after their stage performance. It would be nice to know if they took their act any further. I love the ‘Midnight game show’ However, I wouldn’t want to be woken up in the middle of the night and made to answer questions and have my bedroom full of people whilst answering them. My favourite part of the show is ‘Send to all’ where Michael gets hold of a celebrities mobile phone, with all their contacts in, celeb and non celeb, and sends a text to all. Leading to some hilarious resulting answers. Even from celebrities th...

Wildcard Wednesday Guessable?

I find this game show to be a brilliant concept. The teams have to play guessing games to lead them to clues as to who’s picture, a celebrity, is in the ‘Mystery box’. The team that wins the most points goes first at guessing, but it is the team that guesses correctly, out of the 2 teams, that wins the entire episode. Some of the games are good clear ways to find the clues to go up onto the mystery board, this is made up of ‘Places’ People’ and ‘Items’ the celebrities have been/worked in, worked with or things they have done or are associated with, but some are silly like ‘Listy Cuffs’ where members of the teams have to list items, ways or things under a category. Some of the categories are silly and just made to, what I can only describe as, ‘Shoe horning’ in a clue relating to the picture of the person in the box. Another silly way of finding clues is ‘Spells like team spirit’, where a clue is given for a tricky word and a spotlight is focused on a member of the team and they h...

Mum's Monday Beyond Paradise

I have seen episodes of ‘Death in Paradise’ of which this is a spin off from. I personally love and am curious to find out/know what happens to people/characters that move on. So this appealed to me, I also 1. I remember Kris Marshall playing Nick in the sitcom My Family with Robert Lindsay. Also 2. This was announced/trailered as a ‘Ghost story’, which also personally appeals to me, so I thought I would watch. The first episode,  I have to say that was an exciting, clever police chase.  What a ‘Snug’ entrance. This is amusing to see. The scenery this programme is set in is lovely and picturesque. Um, I have mixed feelings as to whether or not he will fit in. So, everyone has their technique. I love his. It is a brilliantly human approach. Sometimes the ‘Reckless’ approach used correctly or course, is good. I love the script. I don't condone breaking the rules, so will say the script has a few ‘Artistic licence included. This reminds me of Scooby Doo (William Hanna and ...

Fun Friday Homes Under The Hammer

This is a lighthearted day time TV programme where people buy properties at Auction(s) with the main intention of developing it. This programme has been on for many years and despite bringing in new presenters showing us, the viewers around the properties and giving good advice, in the form of the ‘3 Golden Rules’  View the property before you buy it, an example,  there could be more work needing a bigger budget to be done. Read the legal pack, for example as some properties are unmortgageable due to maybe short leases, built from a non conventional material or there might be more fees to pay than you have budgeted for. And  Do your research, for example,  there might be a ‘Ceiling’ price in the area and if you did an expensive refurb you may not get your money back and make a loss instead of a profit and the area might not have what you need or too much of what you don’t want. This programme has become repetitive and, I feel, is it worth watching the same dev...

Wildcard Wednesday Pointless

This is a clever game show as the reverse of Family Fortunes, where the contestants have to find the most popular answers on the board. Pointless is where the contestants have to find the most ‘Obscure’ answer where none of the 100 mentioned anything from a category. It has changed a bit as before the contestants had just 2 appearances/chances to get through to the final, now they have 3. This is good because if some get knocked out in the first round there are more chances to go further through the game to come. Also another change I like is that if a ‘Pointless answer' is found £250 is added to the jackpot, as some games may not have had this happen, a new round has been put in for more chances of a pointless answer. I also like that in the final round there are 4 and not the original 3 categories to choose from for the final round topic. All the contestants have to do is get a pointless answer to win the jackpot that does keep growing if a few don’t win it. It is harder than i...

Mum's Monday Tipping Point

This is a clever game show taken from an amusement arcade where contestants have to answer questions to win discs to play in like a 2p/10p ‘Coin pusher’ machine. The contestants win money in relation to how many discs they get over the front ‘Tipping point’.  It is good to watch if the discs fall right for the contestant and not so nice if they fall the wrong direction/side away from a possible heap built up on the front of the machine. It is also alright if the contestants don’t always stick to the same ‘Drop zone’ throughout the whole show and swap and change between zones. I like how to win the ‘Jackpot’ the gold disc is dropped into the machine and all the contestants have to do is get it to drop over the ‘Tipping point’. An easy question the contestant gets 1 disc but to aim for a harder 3 disc question they get 3 attempts from 1 right answer. I have mixed feelings at the end as if you do not win the ‘Jackpot’ and opt to keep the money you have won and not gamble on a f...

Friday Fun Fawlty Towers made a good Advert

During an episode of Fawlty Towers Basil (John Cleese) has an issue with his car, he runs off out of sight of the camera and comes back with a tree branch and proceeds to hit his car.  This scene is well known as to how many people actually found it very funny. Sadly, I didn't find it as funny. However, when the Specsavers Advert came out and John Cleese as in Fawlty Towers has an issue with his car, runs off and comes back with a tree branch and proceeds to hit the wrong car, a Police car with it. It really works! It is funny, relevant and makes sense.  I do have a favourite scene in Fawlty Towers, now Manuel (Andrew Sachs) is portrayed as a foreigner who doesn’t speak or understand much of the English language. So when a Hotel guest requests some more ‘Toilet roll’ Manuel has trouble understanding that ‘Room 22’ requires toilet roll and for him to take some up to the room. We next see Manuel with what we can assume 22 toilet rolls in his arms about to go up to room 22...

Wildcard Wednesday Bridge Of Lies

This game show is a clever idea, contestants have 5 minutes to cross a Bridge finding a route of truths avoiding all 10 of the lies, the statements and words that are not true.  Ross Kemp is the host. He is good but he does keep repeating what the contestants are ‘Looking for’ and it does get a bit annoying. There are so many helpful hints: 2 safety zones where if stepped on, the clock is stopped and a random lie is revealed and The ‘Panic Button’ which is in the waiting room with the other members of the team of 4. If the player on the bridge looks to be running the risk of stepping on a lie and halving the money they have accumulated on their round, the button can be pressed therefore safeguarding the money. This can backfire if pressed too soon or not at all. There is only one chance to use it in the entire show and not at all when the last of the 4 players is on the bridge and no one is in the waiting room. In the first 3 rounds each correct answer is worth £100 each but...

Mum's Monday Bargain Hunt

Bargain Hunt is where 2 teams compete with £300 and have 1 hour around an Antique fair or shopping location, to buy 3 items. 1 has to cost more than £75, 4 items to buy 4 X £75 = £300 so average £75 per item, and there is a challenge set by the host of that particular episode, to then send them to auction to make a profit. Profits on all 3 items wins them the amount of money the team has made and ‘The Golden Gavel’.  Pre pandemic 2020 the program changed from showing the ‘Bonus’ item bought by the teams expert with any money left over from the shopping day on the end of the shopping day to revealing it after the first 3 items have been sold, to see if the team had made a profit of loss. Which was then sold so we, as viewers, would see how the team had done. To then change it to leaving the teams to crowd around a small tablet held by the host to see the ‘Bonus’ buys being sold. Which looked badly and clumsily directed.  After Lockdown and following the rules of social d...
