Wildcard Wednesday The Thorn Birds
The Thorn Birds
On the channel 5s soap Neighbours there was the story line that Paige got pregnant with Father Jack’s baby, Father Jack being a priest reminded me of The Thorn Birds starring Richard Chamberlain as Ralph De Bricassart and Rachel as Meggie Cleary. Ralph also being a priest but Meggie has his baby.
Mary Carson (Barbara Stanwyck) was a shrewd and scorned woman and sort her revenge on Father Ralph for not loving her as she loved him. Father Ralph used to visit the ranch, knowing she was a very wealthy woman, yet thinking she had no one to leave it to. That is until she invites her brother’s family to stay and run the ranch. It seems she paraded her family in front of Ralph and then left all her money the church when she passed away, leaving Ralph torn and ultimately tied to the Cleary family, as the church is now in charge of the ranch the Cleary family are and still can live there and run. He did have a choice but as he was a priest first the money went to the church.
During the visits to the ranch by father Ralph he became attached to the youngest daughter Meggie and helped her grow up. One thing he didn’t do was teach her to dance and when at a party he was dancing with another guest Meggie felt she had missed out. This is sad to watch as Ralph has all the right moves and Meggie can only watch with envy.
Ralph refuses to believe that Meggie has grown up as if he sees her as a woman he can’t give her the life she wants from him.
When the sheep shearers come to the ranch Luke O’Neill (Bryan Brown) catches Meggie’s eye and they end up married. Meggie despite her best efforts has done this to escape her feelings for Ralph. It is seen so clearly and she even admits to it later. Ralph on hearing of the marriage runs after her and ends up breaking more of his vows.
This mini-series shows that as a priest, just because you have broken 1 or 2 or all your vows it doesn’t make you a bad person just maybe the priest-hood wasn’t the correct path and you could’ve served God in another way.
Over the 60 years this show covers, we see the ups and downs of this family, showing that money isn’t everything. Fiona ‘Fee’ Cleary (Jean Simmons) on hearing that he family wouldn’t be getting the money, made it clear she didn’t want it she was rich enough with her husband and family. Money isn’t everything.
Thank you for reading
