Fun Friday The Railway Children & The Railway Children Return

This film shows how a wonderful life can turn bad in an instant. This is a good life lesson, to appreciate all that you have. An extremely lovely feel good film which closely follows the book by E Nesbitt.

When I heard about the sequel. The Railway Children Return, and that Jenny Agutter was reviving her role as Roberta ‘Bobby’ I was intrigued and went and saw it at the cinema.

This film has the perfect storyline to make it the perfect sequel to the original film.

I love it and if you had told me that I would buy the DVDs of the 2 films from one of the places they were filmed in, I would have not really believed you,  but this is how that happened

If you would like to visit some of the locations along the Worth Valley Railway where these 2 films were filmed you can as I did.

We arrived at Haworth Yorkshire on Saturday 19th November 2022 as of that day the carpark was £2 for all day. We walked a short distance to Haworth station where we 1. Purchased a train ticket to Oxenhope and 2. Purchased merchandise, including the DVDs of both films box set of The Railway Children and The Railway Children Return, from the very good extensive range of souvenirs in the shop.

Be aware that the train we booked on was subject to a delay so we walked over the bridge at the station, be aware up Butt Lane, which is a steep hill up to Main Street. Which was used in the 2nd film.and is also a steep hill. The shops are oldie worldly in character and it was fascinating to shop/look around in them. Although 1 or 2 of them were closed at the time we were there.

After a night in the comfortable Keighley Travelodge with an excellent Toby Carvery next door, be aware if you are vegetarian, like me, the breakfast Yorkshire Puddings may sound nice but different and lovely, they do sadly, put bacon in them.

We then proceeded to Oxworth Station which was the main station used in both films. Make sure you have a 50 pence piece for your platform ticket. For not only to help with the upkeep of the station but also for the experience of getting it from the machine as well.

At the station you can see the Station Master’s house used by Bernard Cribbins Character in the first film. We stayed to watch a train arrive and depart at the station with the gates being manually opened and closed.

Overall, I would say, some lovely locations for 2 lovely films.

To read more, there is a book called ‘The Making of The Railway Children. This is compiled for the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway by Jim Shipley. I have the new enlarged 4th edition which I purchased at Oxworth station.

Thank you for reading

Sandra
