Wildcard Wednesday Young Sheldon Season 1

WARNING SPOILERS Young Sheldon This program is a spinoff from the series The Big Bang Theory, focusing on the character Sheldon Cooper (Iain Armitage). The first episode is a good start, realistic and in keeping with the Sheldon (Jim Parsons) Character in Big Bang, although some of it seemed a bit obvious from what we have heard like when during Big Bang Sheldon was watching ‘Professor Proton’ (Bob Newhart). The second episode starts off with Sheldon’s mum Mary (Zoe Perry) being worried about Sheldon being alone and having no friends, but as often is the case she doesn’t talk to Sheldon about it, who is quite happy on his own with his thoughts on science, she talks to everyone else. Also can Sheldon make friends from a book? Answer ‘No not exactly’. The ending and what the FBI agents witness is funny, but I don’t think Mary and George Sr. (Lance Barber) Sheldon’s mum and dad will find it amusing or it would help Sheldon’s case, but I can see why in an episode of Big Bang...

Mum's Monday Moulin Rouge (2001)

WARNING SPOILERS Moulin Rouge (2001) This iconic film musical is set around a nightclub come theatre, with the world renowned symbol of the windmill in 1899/1900. It starts when it is 1900 and we see the film is the story starting in 1899. This is very well done as a flashback.  The film captures the artistic temperament, like the diva type bickering between the female dancers/performers.  It is clever how they incorporate song lyrics as the script, it really works, proving this is indeed a musical whether there is music or not, or if the actors are singing or not as well.  The soundtrack is well done and modern for the era. It fits if a little busy and sometimes full on.  Some of the camera work is a bit blurry, but because of the quickness of the scene changes, I don’t think this can be helped and it also adds to the smoothness in the flow of the film.  The film gets a bit silly during the poetry reading, but quickly becomes beautiful, with Christian (E...

Fun Friday Kelly's Heroes

Kelly’s Heroes The start of this film is a little confusing as to what is happening apart from the obvious and the rain. After Kelly (Clint Eastwood) brings back the captured German colonel to what could be described as command central, you have to be very observant to notice that the lead bars are not all that they seem to be. It is very clever to get the colonel drunk, not for the purpose of war intelligence information, but for information on a more lucrative pot of gold or bars as in this case. It turns out gold can be very persuasive over ruling any need for authorisation. Don’t you just hate it when a vacation turns out to be, not what you expected or wanted it to be? They have very different ideas of a good time or a rest. This film reminds me of the film ‘The Italian Job’ but set in war time also instead of three minis, three Sherman tanks will have to do, with a few amusing alterations and additions, one being music. The mission has all been worked out and plan...

Wildcard Wednesday Murder They Hope Season 2

Can’t See The Wood For The Trees This is strangely, cleverly realistic, as it takes all sorts to make a world. I like how it gets serious in parts at the right moments. I will say that ‘I wish she would have explained a bit more about what was happening to him’ but it is nice to see him do a good job anyway. Verdict, I think they are meant to be together. A Midsummer's Night Scream You can never have too many eggs, well you can. Someone better tell him. Well that was really ‘Shining’ by Stanley Kubrick creepy, well yes murder is murder so who? I think I know. Wow! That is huge. I knew it, it was so clever. The wedding, a cross between The Vicar of Dibley with Dawn French when Alice Tinker (Emma Chambers) and Hugo Horton (James Fleet) got married and a soap opera wedding. The Unusual Suspects That was excellent timing. Well that is a turn up. I do have a question. Although this I can only describe as artistic licence but ‘Where is the jury?’. It wouldn’t have taken much....

Mum's Monday Morning show Mystery A Murder In Mind

It is surprising how many murder mysteries start with a person writing a ‘Book’. Whether this is the source of this film or not we/I will find out. What a lovely ‘TV show’. I love the dog . Him: I don't like him so much. Have I missed something? That is devastating, cold! Oh yes, Mums. Yes I missed something. The interviewer is nice, the interviewee on the other hand, she is the problem. Well that was a twist. I think I know who did it and if I am right this is very clever. Oh! That. The intrigue continues. Yes, the police have to do their job, but she didn’t do it. I believe. It gets better, not. What is she doing? Ok. too obvious and I have another theory on who did it. It’s all happening. Yes, I do have to ask that question ‘What was the motive?’ Well I got something right in one fleeting second. I got the right family. And now I was right again. It is a clever link. Thank you for reading Sandra

Fun Friday The Final Countdown

The Final Countdown Could the attack on Pearl Harbour been prevented? With time travel, maybe. The film starts as just another ordinary day on an air craft carrier, the USS Nimitz. Slowly it becomes apparent, something is not quite right. The film runs at a nice pace; it isn’t rushed that it becomes unrealistic. The special effects are well done, if a little extreme. Afterwards it is good to see the attention to detail as to operations/how they work on an air craft carrier. As far as the air craft carrier crew is concerned and apart from not really knowing what is going on or is happening, it is business as usual for the ship and the surrounding ocean. The realisation of their situation slowly becomes apparent to the air craft carrier crew, although they are in denial the facts are there, which are described in the script really well. It is lovely to see the dog rescued. With the unexpected introductions over, all are safe but are unfamiliar with the surrounding machinery....

Wildcard Wednesday Johnny English Strikes Again

WARNING SPOILERS Johnny English Strikes Again When all the agents are exposed, there is only one thing to do, bring back a school teacher. This is a clever start except the lessons are a bit out of the ordinary, and now we see half term awaits Johnny English. This is a case of ‘Scraping the bottom of the barrel’. This also shows you shouldn’t give Johnny a stun grenade. Now with ‘What’s a Bough?’ (Ben Miller), Johnny can collect his equipment, this is brilliantly thought-out where modern times and an ‘Old school’ agent comes together. This is now where the film becomes a little predictable, Johnny is in the vicinity of fire the suspense is well done and just enough. It is amusing to hear of the ‘Cyber attacks’ and yes the fire, if not the agent is ‘Making progress’. This film also high-lights the modern convenience of a mobile phone. This is a fast paced film and the magnetic boo t s scenes are so cleverly funny to watch. This film also shows it is not a good idea to damag...

Mum's Monday Never Go Back

Never Go Back This film is based on the book with the same name by Lee Child. It is an intriguing start, and the phone did ring, just as Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) said it would. The outcome is that Jack and Major Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders) get into conversations, by phone, as Jack travels to Washington DC, DC for short. Once in DC, Major Turner has been arrested and Jack also finds out a possible life changing situation. In the terms of ‘Never Go Back’, it seems to his old army haunts, or back in time. The title could suggest both. Who knew, how useful a salt shaker could be and how it can put an end, or delay the men watching Jack. We just have to find out Why they are so interested in him. There is something, that happened in Afghanistan, and is still an issue, as a result Jack is arrested, even though he wasn’t out there at the time. All I can see is he is involved because he has been talking to Major Turner. As always Jack is observing his surroundings, you just know he ...

Fun Friday Pearl Habor

Pearl Harbor The start of the film is a mix of two boys just playing and ultimately having an exhilarating life changing experience, and a lesson in war is not an event to use against someone. It is sad to see that a boy mixing up his letters in the past was seen as ‘Stupid’ when we know as in the nature of this film he has so much more he can contribute to life, proving life is not all academic. Sadly, the reference to the first world war, although commonly used as in ‘The war to end all wars’ we know the second world war happened, but it is nice to hear that there was hope for no more death and destruction in war. It is amusing to see the medical centre and checks; it was harsh in more ways than one, but it is what the government wants so the government gets it. So we know Rafe (Ben Affleck) gets his letters mixed up but is an excellent pilot with perfect eyesight, and deserves to keep his wings. So yes he needs help, but it has been bought to my attention as to what use is a ...

Wildcard Wednesday The Case of the Drowned Pearl by Robin Stevens

This book has a strong start but I don’t like how it is written in not following the rules of not contaminating a crime scene or removing/tampering with evidence, to name a few things that are wrong. They should have stood clear and alerted the authorities. This doesn’t give out a good lesson of what to do in these circumstances. Although this book could have been researched a bit better it is overall well written and somewhat clever for the younger reader it is aimed at, apart from what I have mentioned above. This does make me intrigued as to who did it in this simply written story. Well that was an unexpectedly clever ending. The clues are there. This is an easy book to read despite the double standards of the collecting of evidence that didn’t need to be there in the end, or if it did it was convenient and made to fit. That was still wrong overall though. I did actually like this book in the end. Thank you for reading Sandra
