Wildcard Wednesday What is in a date?
What is in a date?
First and relevant to the blog, the date this blog was written was 3/5/2020
With VE day on May the 8th, May the 4th It got me thinking that dates are not just numbers. Below is some of the different types of dates that may come up throughout a person’s life time: first
Patterns, the first pattern that stood out to me was 12/12/12 and then 21/12/12 same numbers changed around and the last I will see of the sequence of numbers. Other patterns are from 01/01/01 to 09/09/09. We will have dates like these in the future like 21/12/2112 and 21/12/2121 but, and only because people are living longer, babies born nowadays and from now on and just the very young could see these dates.
Personal, these personal dates to individuals are your Birthday and also could be your Wedding anniversary date. These are the more well-known dates but any date that has a significant meaning to you is a special date. You could have recovered from an illness or in my case I did a parachute jump on 11/8 one year. Some of these dates that can/could be easy to remember to an individual can be used as PIN numbers or other security system codes.
Religion, there are many religious festivals, but because of the time of year, and only that I will mention just these few, Easter was not long ago and Ramadan is this time of year having started in April. Christmas is another notable date getting a mention because one, the date doesn’t change from year to year and it is a big celebration.
Anniversaries, I have already mentioned VE day, but there are more like, the day the Berlin wall came down also the end of the first world war, remembrance Sunday around the 11/11 the 11th November.
Saints, some days are dedicated to the Patron Saints of around the UK these are, St. George’s day in England 23/4, St. Patrick’s day in Ireland 17/3, St. Andrew’s day in Scotland 30/11 and St. David’s day in Wales 1/3.
American, the American date system is back to front to ours, this is sadly and tragically how we get 9/11 the 11th of September. This sadly shows how a date can be used against people. 911 is equivalent to our emergency number 999.
Novelty, these are fun dates that can also be crossed referenced with Saints, religious festivals or anniversaries or even a film reference. These dates are Valentine’s day 14/2 a Saint, Pancake day before the start of Lent before Easter, Halloween a spooky date on 31/10, Guy Fawkes/Firework night 5/11 the anniversary date that Guy Fawkes tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament, April Fool’s day 1 /4 and May the Fourth which is where the idea for this blog originated from when I got thinking about dates and their meanings, as tomorrow is 4/5 and it was referenced in the Warner Bros Television Program The Big Bang Theory, as a play on words for ‘May the Force be with you’ from George Lucas’s Star Wars films.
Miscellaneous/Other, although I have mentioned many dates there are a few that stand out that I haven’t because they are a mix of one offs, these include Mothering Sunday on a date in March, Father’s day on a date in June, the end of the Tax year in April, clock change dates and Deadlines
like Brexit dates and the Covid 19 reviews. I could have made this blog 365 or even 366 (Leap year 29/2) paragraphs long but I think I have answered the question: So what is in a date? Answer as we have seen, more than just the numbers.
Thank you for reading
