I don’t like it, although I find it amusing that 47 years of age is considered old in this book. It is, to, me a bit disconcerting as I am a little over that age. Also this book is written in modern times and is set in world war 2, so to read of the attitudes towards women/wives at the time which are very much out of date not necessarily a bad thing as it shows how far, over the years women have come and that they have made a difference.
It is good and I can see that Polly wanted to help James and yes, the situation he is facing is partly down to Polly, and now it is amusing to read of what Flo found, did and said the next morning.
It is intriguing as there seems to be an underlying issue between Flo and Archie. Chapter three comes to an abrupt end, so I want to read further to find out what happens, as they say’ Leave them wanting more’. I don’t want to put this book down now and roll on Christmas, in this book anyway.
So now it is Christmas Day, it is all written really well, although I would have liked to have read of what presents Emmie had received. Sadly as with all good things, as the saying goes, ‘They come to an end’. So we are now reminded of that there is a war once more.
I am glad Marian is ok, well at the moment, it seems her leg is the least of her worries with Flo on the case. I don’t agree with Flo, she should mind her own business, but this is the modern me writing this and this story is set in very different times. Now I say, good on her, Marian that is and I hope it works out for her also.
It is clever, however, widely known and quite rightly, that if you don’t know anything you can’t give away war secrets. Also now as no news is good news, it is now sad to read of a telegram that has arrived.
It is lovely to read about a lighthearted ‘Talent show’ and it is also amusing to read Polly is not happy about it, well the exchange of views anyway. I hope it is as fun to read as it sounds in the story. Well it sounded fun, well attended and seemed sweet to me as well.
I like reading about the plans for Emmie. It is a lovely idea and if it helps Flo, and I agree about what she said about the room and her heart, then it is a good thing.
I love how Marian wants to better herself, sadly as off the time/era this has to be done against the odds. I can, however, see her way of thinking. Well, all I can say is ‘Good old Marian’.
The war has been over for a while now and a lot has changed including an unexpected return and lifestyle change. It is good to see Polly have a nice house of the time and a modern appliance again of the time. It is sad that Flo cannot be happy for her daughter but to choose instead to think of it as ‘Showing off’. What is also unexpected is the random mention of James. This came as a surprise. I love the conversation between father and daughter and it is sweet and amusing to read that George doesn’t need to be a ‘Magician’. Now Polly should tell George how she feels.
It is a lovely idea, with Christmas approaching again that not only did Polly suggest that George’s Gran could come for Christmas, but Emmie writes to Father Christmas and lets him know their new address. It is sad to know who wouldn’t be around the table at Christmas but however, a ‘Toast’ is a lovely thought. It is nice to hear that there is a happy event planned, but first there is a shocking loss, again. I hope things work out for Polly, and the others.
As I read the underlying issue with Marian has resurfaced again, which I believe I know as I read through this story. I don’t want to put this book down to find out if I am right. I’m right. This part is like and reminds me of a well known storyline from the BBC soap EastEnders.
After the information it is nice to read that nothing has changed in that part, but for Polly, Emmie and someone else things have taken a heartwarming turn for the best, so it makes for a nice ending to the story/book.
Thank you for reading
Sandra
